Από την ηλικία των οκτώ ετών, η Αμαλία ξεκίνησε να πονάει. Παρά τις συνεχείς επισκέψεις της σε γιατρούς και νοσοκομεία, κανένας δεν κατάφερε να διαγνώσει εγκαίρως το καλόηθες νευρίνωμα στο πόδι της. Δεκαεπτά χρόνια αργότερα, η Αμαλία έμαθε ότι το νευρίνωμα είχε πια μεταλλαχθεί σε κακόηθες νεόπλασμα.

Για τα επόμενα πέντε χρόνια η Αμαλία είχε να παλέψει όχι μόνο με τον καρκίνο και τον ακρωτηριασμό, αλλά και με την παθογένεια ενός Εθνικού Συστήματος Υγείας που επιλέγει να κλείνει τα μάτια στα φακελάκια κι επιμένει να κωλυσιεργεί με παράλογες γραφειοκρατικές διαδικασίες. Εκτός από τις ακτινοβολίες και τη χημειοθεραπεία, η Αμαλία είχε να αντιμετωπίσει την οικονομική εκμετάλλευση από γιατρούς που στάθηκαν απέναντί της και όχι δίπλα της. Πέρα από τον πόνο, είχε να υπομείνει την απληστία των ιδιωτικών κλινικών και την ταλαιπωρία στις ουρές των ασφαλιστικών ταμείων για μία σφραγίδα.

Η Αμαλία άφησε την τελευταία της πνοή την Παρασκευή 25 Μαϊου 2007. Ήταν μόλις 30 ετών.

Πριν φύγει, πρόλαβε να καταγράψει την εμπειρία της και να τη μοιραστεί μαζί μας μέσα από το διαδικτυακό της ημερολόγιο. Στην ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση http://fakellaki.blogspot.com, η νεαρή φιλόλογος κατήγγειλε επώνυμα τους γιατρούς που αναγκάστηκε να δωροδοκήσει, επαινώντας παράλληλα εκείνους που επέλεξαν να τιμήσουν τον Ορκο του Ιπποκράτη. Η μαρτυρία της συγκίνησε χιλιάδες ανθρώπους, που της στάθηκαν συμπαραστάτες στον άνισο αγώνα της μέχρι το τέλος.

«Ο στόχος της Αμαλίας ήταν να πει την ιστορία της, ώστε μέσα απ' αυτήν να αφυπνίσει όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερους ανθρώπους και συνειδήσεις. Κυρίως ήθελε να δείξει ότι υπάρχουν τρόποι αντίστασης στην αυθαιρεσία και την εξουσία των ασυνείδητων και ανάλγητων γιατρών, αλλά και των γραφειοκρατών υπαλλήλων του συστήματος υγείας.»

Σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις του άρθρου 77 του Ν. 2071/1992, θεωρείται πειθαρχικό παράπτωμα για τους γιατρούς του Ε.Σ.Υ:

«Η δωροληψία και ιδίως η λήψη αμοιβής και η αποδοχή οποιασδήποτε άλλης περιουσιακής παροχής, για την προσφορά οποιασδήποτε ιατρικής υπηρεσίας.»

Η Αμαλία Καλυβίνου αγωνίστηκε για πράγματα που θεωρούνται αυτονόητα σε ένα σύγχρονο ευρωπαϊκό κράτος. Δυστυχώς δεν είναι και τόσο αυτονόητα στην Ελλάδα. Συνεχίζοντας την προσπάθεια που ξεκίνησε η Αμαλία, διαμαρτυρόμαστε δημόσια και απαιτούμε:
